Connect to a network

Ethernet:

Remove the lower housing cover of your Openvario and connect an Ethernet cable to the Cubieboard RJ45 connector, that´s it!

Warning! Never try to connect Ethernet to one of the four IGC compatible RJ45 connectors on the backside of your Openvario!

Audio Vario / Speed to Fly

How to use audio vario

When you boot into XCSoar audio vario is enabled by default. The best way to use it is with a stick remote. Change between vario and speed to fly (STF) with a switch on the remote. A long press on the quickmenu button takes you directly to the vario menu where you can change volume level, set McCready value or mute the vario tone with the four way switch on the stick remote.

Cockpit Fotos of OpenVario Installations

This page is intended to show installation examples of the OpenVario. It can be a real challenge to arrange instrumentation in a narrow glider cockpit. In most cases a complete re-arrangement of the cockpit will be required. In order to keep software and airspace updates simple, USB-connectors at the panel are recommended. Some builders find it useful to have paper templates of the commonly used 80 mm and 57 mm instrument cutouts. You can find more cockp…

Isolate speaker cinch socket

Any contact between the outside of the Cinch connector (speaker connector) and the metallic housing creates a short circuit on the audio amplifier output. Luckily, the audio amplifier has short circuit protection so there is no damage to be expected, but the audio signal is shut off.
Either increase the opening in the housing back plate, or slip a short ring of heat shrink tube between connector and housing.

You can download the DXF files for all mechanical parts here. Please keep in mind that there are several variants, depending on the display size.

All parts are designed for manufacturing on hobby CNC routers. This allows production in low quantities or even one-offs with decent quality at low costs. Maybe you have built R/C models yourself, or know someone who does? These CNC routers have become very popular with modelers in the last years. Ask around, and chances are good someone can…

Openvario Setup Guide

General

This should guide you through the first setup of your Openvario. You need an USB keyboard, a µSD card with at least 8GB, and a USB thumb drive. Save yourself (and us) a lot of headaches and use a good quality µSD card, and thumb drive. As examples, Samsung Evo+ µSD card and Sandisk Ultra Fit are a good choice.

Building the Openvario Flight Computer isn't hard. If you have basic soldering skills (that means soldering SMD components is ok for you), and share the enthusisam for sailplane avionics, you will most likely succeed in building one.
